Rua Augusta Suites

Heraklion, Crete

Timeless Grandeur.

The building is located on the most historic and central street of Heraklion, 25th August Street. It was built in 1911 by the Ionian Bank and functioned as a bank branch for more than a century. It is a characteristic example of eclectic architecture with an academic style. Its façades consistently follow the principles of neoclassical architecture, with perfect symmetry on all sides.

The building had been listed as preserved solely in regard to its exterior façades. Inside, its character had been completely altered over the years, and the absence of the original drawings did not allow us to know its initial form with precision.

The goal of the architectural study was to preserve and renew the façades while at the same time creating new interior spaces that would engage harmoniously with the external shell. The new entrance was designed with a sense of grandeur in mind. The floor was clad in marble with a classic pattern, while wooden panels placed on the right and left form a gallery-like corridor.
