House in Palaio Psychiko

At a time when architecture balances between memory and the need for renewal, the restoration of a 1930s interwar single-family house in one of Athens’ historic suburban neighborhoods, Palaio Psychiko, stands as a characteristic example of creative reinterpretation. The houses of that era, with their stone masonry and strict spatial hierarchy, embodied a more formal urban daily life, yet one deeply connected to the garden and the surrounding environment.

The contemporary approach to Mansion 1930 chooses to preserve the elements that carry history. The original stonework, the old wooden entrance door, and the metal canopy were retained in order to safeguard the building’s character. In contrast, the interior was radically reconfigured into a unified, flowing layout that serves the needs of a more open and flexible way of living, while maintaining the shared living spaces on the ground floor and the bedrooms upstairs.

Particular emphasis was placed on extending the house toward the garden, with a new glass structure that functions as a living boundary between the home and the landscape.
