Makris Restaurant

Athens

Makridis Associates Architects sought to honor the area’s rich and multifaceted history by unveiling the long-hidden layers of cultural significance embedded in the building.

Inspired by stone and marble ruins from the Classical Greek period (450 B.C.) found in the basement, as well as the refined cotto/brick roof detailing from the Neoclassical 18th century, the team embraced the concept of working with overlapping layers of time, cultural exchanges, and material assemblages. These historical fragments were preserved and seamlessly integrated with contemporary, minimal design elements that now take center stage.

The main fine dining rooms have been thoughtfully adorned with hanging terracotta vessels, elegant earthy-toned fabrics, and furnishings crafted from locally sourced marble, wood, and brass. These elements are complemented by artwork from local artists and decorative items sourced from nearby antique markets, paying homage to the building’s storied past.
