attica, bogdanos architecture

The store is located in Tsimiski Street, at the center of Thessaloniki. It occupies ten levels covering a total area of 7,000 m².

The building was constructed in the 1970s for commercial use through a series of interventions.

The renovation preserved the existing vertical movement -fixed staircases and escalators-making the necessary changes in order to meet the operational and safety requirements.

The façade was redesigned so that the store communicates with the road front. Keeping the abstractness of the era it was firstly built, the building proposes a modern identity interacting with the surrounding listed buildings.

Marble and natural stone are combined with metallic surfaces, consolidating the urban presence.

In the interior, the central core is predominant that brings together all movements. The fixed staircases were coated with oak timber acquiring a solid image and serving as a  reference point at all levels. In contrast, the escalators  bear surfaces of acrylic mirror and 'lose out on' their nature through a game of geometry and reflections.

Lifts made of whitish marble and linear lighting components complete this discourse of volumes and materials.

The off-white palette expands to all elements of the premise, from floor to ceiling colouring and coatings, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort. The premise is designed in "neutral" tones in order to accept the diverse elements of furniture, preserving though the overall view of the Department store.

Special emphasis was given to the lighting using LEDs, reducing energy consumption and increasing the sense of visual clarity. Different color temperatures, indirect sources and illumination for highlighting the building create a harmonious ensemble that enhances the experience at the place.

Glossy surfaces, special lighting and natural materials bring out the place's volume and geometry. Classically-oriented elements are introduced in a new way, communicating the timelessness of the store. The identity of attica is enriched with new elements while maintaining the chain's recognizability.
