Villa in Kifissia, GEM Architects

The existing villa from the 80’s is totally refurbished. The new design aimed to create a contemporary building by means of form simplification and energy uplift. The ornamental elements, cornices and tiles, where eliminated to create simple geometric forms. The shell of the building was rapped with exterior insulation to improve its thermal properties.

New double glazed windows with thermal gap replaced the old ones. The insulation under the roof was reinforced too. At the interior the design of the ceilings and the hidden lighting sources attempt to create a feeling of breaking the boundaries. The different rooms where unified to create a continuous space. Wide ground floor openings create continuity with the landscape.

A new fireplace placed between dining and living area unifies the space. On the first floor five bedrooms and three bathrooms were created. Simple forms and natural material were used to create serenity. On the walls and furniture warm earth colors inspired by Greek landscape where applied. In bathrooms and on selected walls in the living area beton ciree application creates a hospitable feeling. The grayish varnish on wooden surfaces of furniture, doors and floor completes the palette in a harmonic synthesis.
