Media Labs, A&M Architects

In February 2013 A&M Architects Engineers & Project Managers accepted the invitation to participate in Future’s Library competition for the renovation of 9 Public and Municipal libraries, throughout Greece.  The main aspect of the competition was to develop attractive spaces - for young people - that sharpen creative learning inside the library area.  A&M proposal was chosen among 10 that were submitted by tender. The bidding process led to the creation of Media Labs and to a constant collaboration between A&M and Future Library.

The main design challenge that A&M had to resolve  was how the traditional library space could be transformed into a laboratory for experimentation and knowledge generation.  While  libraries were previously considered as  strict educational archives, their space is now transformed informed by cutting edge technological tools.

The main aspect of A&M’s proposal was the development of a place with a variety of educational and creative impulses. By setting aside traditional educational models and   bridging the distance between the trainer and the trainee, the main concern was to create infrastructure for both traditional/personal research and for collaborative/joint experimentation. The proposal explores the digital space boundaries of libraries network upgrading the infrastructure of the ongoing cooperation and exchange of knowledge, both locally and globally.

The basic design parameter was to create a design module that could be adjusted in each one of the 9 libraries and in any other place proposed in the future, with the similar spatial effects. This way the proposal could effectively support the expansion of the media labs network. Furthermore, an additional design parameter that was considered equally important was the space adaptability and customization according to user requirements, offering a wide range of activities and impulses.
