The first impression given is that this is a purely "inward looking" house with a few openings.

Actually, they are placed sparingly to protect from intense north-facing winds but also to maintain the privacy from the adjacent buildings. Upon entering the house the repetition of white and gray creates a plain background allowing the adjustment of colored objects that otherwise would not match with each other.
