Agia Triada Public Square, Agnes Couvelas – Panagiotatou

The design of the new square is destined to highlight the recently erected church of the Holy Trinity and its individual uses. The different zones vary in their layout, which allows a certain functional specialization of the programs beyond the basic separation between the lower body housing the recreation areas, and the churchyard where the areas devoted to both recreation and religious ceremonies are located.

A shallow pond is also introduced as a symbol of spirituality and precondition of life. The lower plaza engages the horizontal soft ground, the pond and the rising planes of the ramps. This formal geometric garden creates an environment of nearly the same scale and equal value as the built volume of the church, while its enclosed character and rigid artificial structure act as an inner courtyard (cloister) of the church.
