Τwo-storey House Renovation in Nea Erythraia, A – team MELETI

This typical two-storey house was built some 30 years ago in the middle of an elongated plot (1:4 ratio). Caged between an adjacent building (blind southern view) and an apartment building, it suffered from almost non-existent contact with the outdoors, and that on the two narrow views only. The northern side, featuring small auxiliary openings, gave to the outdoor path connecting the eastern and the western surrounding areas.

With these limitations in mind, a three-level house was completely redesigned to meet the requirements of a family with a contemporary vocabulary. The two blind elongated views became an hourglass neck, through which the everyday flow is channelled, restoring the natural connection of the ground floor with the two outdoor areas. The existing layout of interior functions was deemed satisfactory in structure, and its vocabulary was fully updated by discreet changes in materials and openings.

Remaining in the ground floor, the living areas form a visually, functionally and aesthetically unified space around the nucleus of vertical movement. The only closed space, the bathroom serves as the back of the open-plan kitchen. The staircase was redesigned into a brightly lit, geometric, sculptural showpiece.
